Quick answer: Choose Vidreno On Demand when the main thing you are selling is access to a film, with a public page for purchases or rentals and a flat 10% fee including payment processing. Consider Gumroad when downloadable files are central to the offer, such as a film accompanied by a screenplay or production workbook. Gumroad also streams video, so the useful question is what your buyer should receive after paying.

A viewer who wants to watch your documentary tonight has a different job from a filmmaker buying your documentary to study how you made it. Start there. The checkout, access rules and extras should all support that promise.

This comparison looks at those two buying experiences and the current fees. It concerns Vidreno On Demand, our service for public film purchases and rentals. Vidreno Hosting, used to embed videos on your own website or app, is a separate service.

Are you selling a film to watch or a package to keep?

Write down the sentence you want a buyer to be able to say after checkout. For a film release it might be, “I can watch the full film now.” For a study edition it might be, “I have the film, the script and the location notes.” Those sound similar, but they create different expectations.

Your offerWhat matters mostWhere to start
A film available to buy or rentA clear viewing offer and a simple route into the filmVidreno On Demand
A downloadable film with written or audio extrasFile delivery and a clear list of what the buyer keepsGumroad
A video that buyers can stream without downloadingPlayback and access terms, rather than the presence of a download buttonBoth merit a look

For example, imagine a documentary about a fishing harbour. The general audience gets a film viewing offer. A filmmaking audience might want the same film plus a location notebook and a sound recording collection. The second offer needs reliable delivery of several kinds of material. Do not promise a package until you have checked that your chosen service supports every item.

Gumroad supports digital products and video files. Its streaming documentation lets sellers choose between downloadable video and streaming only access. We have not verified delivery of PDF or audio bundles through Vidreno On Demand, so we would not recommend it on that basis.

What does the film viewer get with Vidreno On Demand?

Vidreno On Demand gives your film a public sales page with purchase, rental, or free and optional contribution offers. You can make a premiere a rental and offer other films differently. There is no subscription required to sell.

The appeal is a focused offer: here is the film, here is the price, and here is how the viewer can access it. Paywalled videos are hosted and delivered outside the storage and bandwidth limits of the separate Hosting plans. You do not need to choose a Hosting subscription just to start selling your film.

Keep the wording of your offer precise. A purchase and a rental should not look interchangeable. For rentals, confirm when the access clock starts and what happens when it expires before announcing the release. The example above is not a promise that every film uses the same rental period. Our rental premiere guide explains the questions to settle before launch.

Can Gumroad sell a film without giving buyers the file?

Yes. Gumroad documents a streaming only option that disables the normal file download for that video. If you want buyers to receive a downloadable copy instead, that is a separate choice. Neither the word “buy” nor the existence of a video player tells customers which one you have selected.

There is a useful quality distinction too. Gumroad says its HD streaming resolution is 1080p and that uploaded 4K videos are reduced to 1080p for streaming. If your offer includes a downloadable file, describe its resolution separately from the streamed version. Do not advertise “watch in 4K” simply because your source file is 4K.

Its documentation also says automatic transcoding starts after the first successful sale. Allow time to check the processed playback before directing a large audience to the product. These are documented behaviours, not results from a purchase test we have carried out.

Streaming only access is not a guarantee against every form of copying. Avoid promising that a film cannot be recorded or shared. What matters for your offer is that the buyer understands the permitted access and receives what you described.

How do the fees compare on a film sale?

Checked on 30 September 2026. Vidreno charges a flat 10% per sale, including payment processing. Gumroad’s headline direct sale fee is 10% plus $0.50, but its detailed fee guide lists credit card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 separately. Discover sales have a different 30% fee that includes processing.

Sale routePublished feeDetail that changes the comparison
Vidreno On Demand10%, payment processing includedNo subscription required to sell
Gumroad standard direct sale10% plus $0.50, with card processing listed separately at 2.9% plus $0.30A fixed charge has more impact on a small sale
Gumroad eligible direct sale after the monthly threshold5% plus $0.50, with processing still separateApplies to new direct sales once paid sales reach $20,000 in a calendar month
Gumroad Discover sale30%, processing includedDifferent acquisition route from sending your own audience a link

Sources: Vidreno On Demand, Gumroad’s detailed fees and Gumroad pricing. Gumroad’s volume discount resets each month. It does not retrospectively reduce earlier sales, and refunds can bring an account below the threshold again. Custom account fees can take precedence.

Here is what remains from three example USD prices after the listed platform and card processing charges. These illustrations exclude sales tax, refunds, currency conversion, affiliate commissions and any account specific arrangements. They are not a payout forecast. Figures are rounded to cents.

Film priceVidrenoGumroad standard directGumroad eligible discounted direct
$6$5.40$4.43$4.73
$12$10.80$9.65$10.25
$40$36.00$34.04$36.04

The standard Gumroad card example uses price × 0.871 minus $0.80. The discounted example uses price × 0.921 minus $0.80. Vidreno uses price × 0.90. At $12, that leaves about $1.15 more per sale on Vidreno than the standard Gumroad example.

The last row matters: a larger eligible sale on Gumroad can cost slightly less under the discounted rate. That is why “always cheaper” would be the wrong claim. For a modestly priced film sold directly to your own audience, Vidreno’s inclusive percentage is particularly easy to budget around. If you still need to decide what to charge, use our film rental and purchase pricing guide.

Gumroad also states that it operates as merchant of record and handles sales tax collection and remittance. That is a useful operational consideration. It does not remove every tax obligation a creator may have, and this comparison does not assume that Vidreno provides the same arrangement.

Watch how a film selling flow works

Alan Houser’s short demonstration shows a Gumroad video offer and how a seller can share it from a website. It is an older recording, useful for seeing the idea of a film offer rather than following the current interface. Use the current documentation linked above for fees, settings and access terms.

Watch the demonstration on YouTube. As you watch, consider whether your buyer wants to begin watching or collect a set of files. That is the decision to make before choosing the sales page.

Check the offer before you send people to it

Put these five questions next to your draft sales page. They are a useful way to catch a mismatch between what you intend and what a buyer expects.

  1. What arrives? Name the film and any extras individually. Say whether each item is streamed or downloaded.
  2. How long is access? Explain a rental’s start and expiry rules. Keep the purchase wording separate.
  3. What can the buyer actually watch? Check processed playback, subtitles and the devices you intend to advertise. Do not assume that uploading a file proves the viewing experience.
  4. What is the total price? Check checkout totals and the fee route that applies to your own traffic.
  5. Where does help come from? Make the support route easy to find if a receipt or access link is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vidreno On Demand or Gumroad better for selling a film?

Vidreno On Demand is a good fit for a public film purchase or rental offer with an inclusive 10% fee. Gumroad deserves consideration when downloadable material is central to the product. Compare the access you want to sell, not just the headline percentage.

Does Gumroad support streaming only video?

Yes. Its documentation describes disabling file downloads for a video so customers watch it on Gumroad. Make that clear in your offer if buyers might otherwise expect a file.

Can I sell a film with a screenplay or workbook?

A digital product service such as Gumroad is worth considering for that package. List exactly what is included and check how each item is delivered. We have not verified this kind of document bundle through Vidreno On Demand.

Does a 4K upload mean Gumroad streams in 4K?

No. Gumroad currently says 4K video is reduced to 1080p for streaming. Keep any claim about a downloadable source file separate from your streaming quality claim.

Does Gumroad’s lower fee apply to every sale after a successful month?

No. The published discount applies to new direct sales after paid sales reach $20,000 in that calendar month, then resets on the first of the next month. Discover remains at 30%, and processing remains separate for direct sales.

Do I need a Vidreno Hosting subscription to sell my film?

No. Vidreno On Demand requires no subscription to sell. Its paywalled videos sit outside the separate Hosting plan storage and bandwidth limits, with the inclusive 10% charged per sale.
